Theatre on TikTok? Athens Meeting on How to Engage a New Generation through Social Media

On October 14th and 15th, 2024, the Theatre Is Cool project held a key meeting in Athens, focusing on how to use social media—particularly TikTok—to engage younger audiences and rejuvenate theatre’s appeal. This meeting marked a significant step in evaluating the project’s social marketing plan and building stronger influencer partnerships to achieve its goals.

Day one of the meeting kicked off with team-building activities and the presentation of social marketing plans from Greece, Italy, and Lithuania. Attendees discussed how to effectively monitor social media posts and adjust strategies to fit each country’s unique cultural context. A major highlight was the emphasis on influencers providing detailed performance insights on their content, which will be crucial in tracking the success of the campaigns. The afternoon featured a productive meeting with a Greek influencer agency, followed by a dissemination session led by William Mayer and Kostas Diamantis.

The second day focused on in-depth analysis of the marketing plan implementation. Participants discussed how to fine-tune ongoing strategies and addressed key administrative and project evaluation concerns. After a brief break, the team outlined the next steps and began preparations for the upcoming meeting in Lisbon.

This successful meeting in Athens has energized participants, who are eager to turn discussions into action. The project’s commitment to using social media—especially TikTok—was reinforced as a powerful tool for expanding and diversifying theatre audiences. With the help of influencers and engaging organic content, the Theatre Is Cool project is well on its way to making theatre more accessible and appealing to a new generation of spectators.
